What you need to know when scrapping or selling your car
Disposing of your old vehicle is not just a matter of dropping it off at your nearest scrap yard or just letting somebody take it away. Although there are hundreds of adverts for scrap car disposal in the back of local newspapers or on-line, many of these will be illegal operators. Never sell your vehicle to someone advertising with just a mobile phone number and without a business premises. Chances are your car could get sold on to somebody else without DVLA being notified. This means it could be used without tax, MOT or insurance; it may be used in criminal activities, or exported overseas. Do you want speeding & parking fines (or worse) landing on your doormat? And if you haven’t notified DVLA in the proper way that you have sold it, then this is exactly what could, and does, happen.

ONLY USE AN MVDA MEMBER TO DISPOSE OF YOUR VEHICLE
Most MVDA members operate collection services & offer competitive market rates for vehicles. And all MVDA members are authorised by the Environment Agency (SEPA in Scotland) as an End of Life Vehicle Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). This means they operate to the highest environmental standards.
The ATF receiving your vehicle will issue you with a ‘Certificate of Destruction’ which ends your responsibility for the vehicle from its date of issue. Always insist on a receipt and (unless you have agreed to the vehicle being sold on for re-use) a Certificate of Destruction.
